چکیده

Introduction Acidification of blood entering the membrane lung (ML) converts bicarbonate ions into dissolved gaseous CO2, increasing the pCO2 transmembrane gradient and thus the extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) [1]. Extracorporeal blood acidification has previously been achieved by infusion of lactic acid, which proved to be effective in rising ECCO2R but determined a mild increase of total CO2 production and induced a slight degree of metabolic acidosis [2], thus limiting the overall effectiveness of such treatment.

CO2 Removal from Air in a Countercurrent Rotating Packed Bed, Experimental Determination of Height of Transfer Unit

Carbon dioxide capture is a key issue in climate change mitigation. For decades the removal of carbon dioxide has been an essential step in many industrial processing operations such as the synthesis of ammonia, natural gas purification, and oil refining. In this study, a rotating packed bed has been designed for absorption of carbon dioxide from an air stream. The rotating packed bed is a comp...

An extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) device operating at hemodialysis blood flow rates

BACKGROUND Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) systems have gained clinical appeal as supplemental therapy in the treatment of acute and chronic respiratory injuries with low tidal volume or non-invasive ventilation. We have developed an ultra-low-flow ECCO2R device (ULFED) capable of operating at blood flows comparable to renal hemodialysis (250 mL/min). Comparable operating conditi...

Efficacy and safety of a low-flow veno-venous carbon dioxide removal device: results of an experimental study in adult sheep

INTRODUCTION Extracorporeal lung assist, an extreme resource in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF), is expanding its indications since knowledge about ventilator-induced lung injury has increased and protective ventilation has become the standard in ARF. METHODS A prospective study on seven adult sheep was conducted to quantify carbon dioxide (CO2) removal and evaluate the safety o...

Control of breathing using an extracorporeal membrane lung.

Various amounts of carbon dioxide were removed through an extracorporeal membrane lung in spontaneously breathing lambs. The decrease in alveolar ventilation was proportional to the fraction of total carbon dioxide removed by the membrane lung. When extracorporeal CO2 removal approximated CO2 production (VCO2), alveolar ventilation almost ceased. Pulmonary ventilation can be controlled by extra...

Evaluation of Two Microporous Polypropylene Membrane Lungs for Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal during Apneic Oxygenation

_____________ _ Five Capiox II 33 (Terumo Corporation) and nine M-2000 (Shiley Incorporated) microporous polypropylene membrane lungs were evaluated for dynamic operating characteristics during apneic oxygenation. Particular emphasis was placed on carbon dioxide and oxygen transfer (VC02 and V02 respectively). The lungs were incorporated into extracorporeal venavenous bypass circuits used with ...
